Looking north and east across the beautiful Lake Vinuela, the valley rises lush and green to meet the wooded slopes of the Sierra Téjeda national park. Rugged and majestic peaks of the Granada mountains form the backdrop to this magical vista. To the northwest, mountains of the Sierra de Camarolos look down on Malaga as they sweep towards warm Mediterranean waters and the beaches of Torre del Mar, Torrox and Nerja.
Protected from winter winds by high mountain ranges to the north and moderated by the sea in summer, the region enjoys a stable and mild climate all year round. The abundance of fresh water and fertile soil has attracted many generations of farmers, from the invading Phoenicians, Greeks, Carthaginians and Romans to those of the present day.
Built by the phoenicians and later occupied by the moors, Zalia together with the castles of Comares and Bentomiz formed the defensive triangle of the Axarquia.
Evidence of these early occupations remain with us today. To the north of our offices can be seen the ruins of the castle of Zalia, from which we take our name.
